The brand new BMW Communications System

The much anticipated new BMW helmet Communication System, offering a range of technological advancements on its predecessor, is now available in BMW Motorrad dealerships. With developments including an innovative new bow mike and control panel design, an improved battery life of 10-12 hours, and quicker and more straightforward installation, the new helmet system looks set to make silent bike journeys a thing of the past.

BMW Motorrad has designed the BMW Communication System, which includes a helmet-specific installation kit, with the popular System 5 helmet in mind.

The BMW Motorrad Communication System is installed within the helmet to provide wireless communication whilst riding. This can be paired either between two helmets for communication between rider and pillion, or with another rider up to a distance of 10 metres. In addition, the system can be linked to additional Bluetooth devices such as satellite navigation, a mobile phone or music player.

The BMW Communication System features a prioritising facility that is programmed to interrupt any low-priority connection whenever a higher-priority paired device transmits a signal. So if, for example, the rider is listening to music when a paired mobile phone begins to ring, the call will automatically broadcast into the helmet, interrupting the feed from the music player. The music will then be restored once the call has ended. This automatic changeover enables quick, easy and safe transfer between devices.

The BMW Communication System is integrated into the helmet. All of the electronics are concealed and therefore protected from the elements, while the keypad is also weather and UV resistant to increase durability. In addition, the new system features a test mode for a function check which is unique to this product.

Operating the BMW Communication System whilst riding is simple, with just three, easy-to-operate buttons installed on the left side of the helmet to switch between devices, or adjust power and volume. The volume buttons also offer a quick ‘mute’ function with a brief double-click, also unique to this product.

The new bow mike design is resilient to the elements, easy to install and has automatic noise suppression to limit disturbance for clearer communication. In addition, the system will automatically adjust the volume to compensate for noise disturbance dependant on speed. At slower speeds, the system also functions with the chin guard (or visor) open – or with an open-face version of the helmet.

The improved battery operating time of 10-12 hours means that the helmet can be used on long journeys without running out of battery and the system can be recharged simply via a plug socket or computer.
