The difference is Williams
Development costs have not been spared, and it shows. In addition to its bigger body, roomier interior and high-grade trim the 2007 Freelander is far more able on and off the road than its predecessor. There's more power from new petrol and turbo diesel engines, and
performance looks strong.
All but the entry-level Freelander 2 are equipped with Land Rover's industry-leading "dial-up" Terrain Response 4x4 system, with four menus to cope with anything from tarmac to wet grass, snow, sand and rocks.
The independent coil-sprung suspension has been designed to deliver outstanding on-road dynamics and unimpeachable off-road credentials. Traction and wheel articulation are at Discovery 3 levels, with ground clearance of 220mm, a wade depth of 500mm, short front and rear overhangs for excellent approach and departure angles from steep ramps and banks and a turning circle of just 11.4 metres.
Longer, wider and heavier than its predecessor, it will tow up to two tonnes and has advanced electronic systems like Roll Stability Control to prevent overturning on side inclines, Gradient Release Control linked to Hill Descent Control for smoother driving off-road on steep slopes and an electronically-controlled Haldex centre coupling to maximise grip in extreme conditions
on and off road.
