The X6 is the largest in BMW's range of confident luxury SUVs, and its M variant adds motorsport performance to this already mightily impressive vehicle. Evidence of the car's potent pace is seen across the exterior, while inside space and comfort are enjoyed as you travel in first-class everywhere.
With its coupé-like shape the X6 M looks like a rapid mover, yet the exterior also stays true to the SUV segment with its chunky alloy wheels and muscular proportions. The front end is defined by an aggressive expression created by narrow headlamps, a sharply contoured bonnet and the two-part kidney grille. Three vast intakes across the bumper cool the engine, and similar vents behind the front wheels also channel air to the brakes to maintain the model's stopping ability. There are flashes of chrome around the grille and the same finish for the quad exhaust pipes as a reminder of BMW luxury, while alloy wheels and front fog lights are two other premium details.
The vehicle's interior further supports its sporting ability, as taking your seat feels like settling into the cockpit of a race car. The three-spoke M leather steering wheel has integrated gearshift paddles, while the gear lever and dynamics buttons fall instantly to hand. There's more refinement here too, as exclusive M multifunctional seats have been fitted and feature subtle M logo-embossed detailing. With high side bolsters and angled shoulder sections, they grip superbly well when cornering at higher speeds. Passengers in the rear remain equally as comfortable with masses of head and legroom surrounding them, and at the back is a roomy boot to hold all the essentials.
Technology connects and entertains in the X6 M, which means all occupants can fully engage with the journeys you take. Among the sophisticated in-car features is the BMW Professional Multimedia system which forms part of the wider ConnectedDrive system. A 10.2-inch display sits at the head of the dashboard and enables you to stream music from the BMW Professional radio or 20GB hard drive and video via the DVD drive. The interface is commanded using an iDrive Touch Controller placed next to the gear shift, enabling you to select the desired media by touch alone. There are plenty more features on the options list if you want to create the ultimate on-board experience. A Bang & Olufsen advanced audio system can be fitted for crisp audio, and rear-seat entertainment with remote control operation can be added for the enjoyment of those on the back bench.
Under the bonnet is a hard-working M TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine that has been fine-tuned on the racetrack to deliver the endless thrills you savour on the road. This twin-turbo charged unit channels 575bhp and 750Nm of torque to all four wheels using BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. This combination minimises any interruption to power delivery when moving up through the gears and helps the X6 M surge from standing to 60mph in around 4.2 seconds.
The X6 M may be closer to a sports car than an SUV, but one trait it shares with off-roaders is a strong build that protects you extremely well. The vehicle is built around an ultra-strong frame that lessens the effect of an impact, and within it there are various active systems which work together to prevent an accident in the first instance. Resilient M compound brakes perform effectively even after demanding use, while inside there's the head-up display. It projects all the most important drive details you need onto the windscreen, so your focus can stay on the road.
