The MINI 3-door Hatch is a true classic, and the latest example builds on the fun of its predecessors with a more efficient and better-connected drive. Seven separate model types are on sale to suit the brand's varied customer base, and they all promise to impress.
The MINI look is one of the most recognisable on the road, and the new 3-door Hatch carries it into a new generation. A wide oval-shaped grille with chrome frame remains on the nose between the familiar circular headlamps, and on either side the rounded wing mirrors are another hallmark of the carmaker. A 'floating' roof with rear spoiler completes the car's distinctive look, with the latter feature a nod to the brand's sporting heritage. For added motorsport inspiration the range-topping John Cooper Works features aggressive front and rear bumpers plus painted brake callipers.
On the inside there are more unique design details such as the elongated ellipse and bezels on the door which match the dynamism of the body. Behind the steering wheel is a large circular speedometer that can be read at a single glance, while the centre stack combines circular climate control dials with retro-style switches. Durable dark cloth is the standard upholstery used to finish the vehicle's supportive seats.
Also included at no extra cost inside every MINI Hatch is a sophisticated audio system with USB interface. It allows you to link your smartphone with the system and access the MINI Connected app, which includes a MINIMALISM Analyser which monitors your driving style and an online search function. Fit the optional Media XL pack to take advantage of an 8.8-inch screen mounted to the centre of the cockpit, which can be commanded using the MINI Controller touchpad or through voice controls.
The MINI 3-door Hatch's entry-level engine is an energetic 102bhp unit that accelerates confidently yet returns an impressive 61.4mpg combined. Stops at the pumps are therefore less frequent, and if you want extra pulling power there are engines that deliver it higher up the range. The Cooper S produces 192bhp and sprints from 0-60mph in around 6.8 seconds, while the 231bhp John Cooper Works does the same in 6.3 seconds. The One D is fitted with a 95bhp diesel if this fuel type is preferred, and it emits just 89g/km with 83.1mpg combined possible too.
When it comes to safety this small car promises big things so you can start every journey with complete confidence. Traditional active systems of Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC) all feature, and can be complemented by optional kit including a Parking Assistant Pack and Active Pedestrian Protection System. For passive protection there are multiple airbags which deploy in relation to the area of impact, plus the option for run-flat tyres.
