BMW S 1000 R

The BMW S 1000 R is a roadster with ambitions to be a superbike, which means potent acceleration and superb agility. It has good looks too, with various details taken straight from the racetrack, adding up to a roadster that transcends the segment.

Design

The first thing you are likely to notice about the S 1000 R is its forward-leaning posture, which shows how eager the bike is to charge onwards. Meanwhile, the aggressive split face and gills above the engine add to its vitality. With a 'naked' design there's much less trim across the body, leaving more of the bike's underpinnings on show.

In typical BMW fashion the riding position has been set ergonomically, with the rider leaning forward with the bike itself, just as you would on a model made for the track. The placement of the saddle provides comfort on longer trips, and extra luxury can be added by choosing optional heated grips

Performance

Performance is where the model leaves others trailing – literally, in many cases. Fitted within the frame is a four-cylinder 999cc petrol powerplant tuned to send 163bhp and 112Nm of torque through a smooth and responsive six-speed gearbox. The S 1000 R charges through the gears with unrelenting energy towards a top speed of over 125mph, and with the optional Gear Shift Assistant fitted there's no interruption to power delivery.

Included by the German manufacturer is an intelligent electronic suspension system for optimum agility and dynamism, as it adjusts performance in milliseconds to suit the road. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) is another cutting-edge technology, fitted here to enable maximum throttle response and prevent rear wheel spin in slippery conditions. They join the two ride modes of Rain and Road, which alter the set-up to your choosing.

Safety and Technology

Advanced BMW Motorrad technology works to make the roadster much safer too. A Race Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Automatic Stability Control (ASC) come as standard to raise the bar for controlled performance, and work in harmony with each ride mode. Cruise control is among the options to assist during longer motorway stints, and you can couple it with an anti-theft alarm for peace of mind once your journey ends.
