What is Motability?

The Motability Scheme exists to help those eligible achieve greater independence through access to affordable vehicles. Operated by Motability Operations Ltd., an independent non-profit company that is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, they lease cars to customers in exchange for their mobility allowance. It works under contract to the Motability charity, which is responsible for oversight of the Scheme.

How do I join the motability scheme?

Am I eligible to join the motability scheme?

You are eligible to join the Motability Scheme if you have at at least 12 months' award remaining, and receive any of the following allowances:

  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

‍ ‍You can also take advantage of the motability scheme if; You are the parent or guardian of someone under the age of 18 (and older than 3), who is in receipt of one of the above benefits. Or a nominated driver of someone who is in receipt of the above benefits.

What are adaptations?

An adaptation is a device, that can be fitted to your car, to improve your driving experience. Adaptations are available to: help you drive, to help you stow your wheelchair or scooter and to help you get in and out of your car.

Can I transfer adaptations from my old car?

If you have previously had a motability vehicle then it could be possible that your adaptations are transferrable onto your BMW or MINI. Williams Motability expert's will be able to advise if your current adaptations can be transfered onto your vehicle, and in the majority of cases, you will not occur any extra costs.

What is a nominated driver?

On the Motability Scheme, you are able to name a nominated driver as part of your lease; this can be yourself, friends, family or carers. Nominated drivers are simply the name given to the selected drivers you have chosen to drive your Motability car. All nominated drivers must meet certain requirements to be eligible.
