A New Generation of Boxer

For more than 35 years, the flat-twin boxer engine in the BMW Motorrad GS and RT models has stood for powerful and reliable propulsion when it comes to setting off on an extended tour or a long-distance journey.

Now BMW has revealed details of the new BMW Motorrad R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT with the new and updated legendary boxer twin engine. Smarter and more powerful than before, BMW is writing a new chapter in the flat-twin boxer’s history book.

The big news is that both the peak power and torque has been upped by 11bhp and 28lb-ft, taking the engines outputs to 136bhp at 7,750rpm and 105lb-ft at 6,250rpm. These gains have been achieved through a mixture of increased displacement and technical engineering improvements. Both models receive an 84cc displacement boost, taking them to 1,250cc and to help improve performance further as well as cut emissions, BMW has added in a new ShiftCam Technology.

This variable valve timing setup is the first application for BMW. It features a secondary cam profile that is activated by a set of pins sliding in groves to move the camshaft axially. This allows for cleaner emissions at lower running speeds and more power at the higher rev range.

The engine isn’t the only area that has been upgraded on the new Motorrad R1250 GS and R 1250 RT. Standard in the R 1250’s suite of standard riding aids is Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Hill Start Control (HSC), which keeps the R 1250 at a standstill without rider intervention when starting off on an incline. Available as an option is Riding Modes Pro which gives additional riding modes, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), ABS Pro, Hill Start Control Pro and Dynamic Brake Assistant (DBC).

There is a full TFT-LCD colour screens now display all the necessary information the rider needs, a 6.5-inch unit in the R 1250 GS and a smaller 5.7-inch display in the R 1250 RT that is supplemented with an analog speedometer and tachometer as well as LED lighting throughout with LED daytime riding lights as a factory fitted option if you want them.

For rider comfort, the seats on the GS and RT versions of the R 1250 are adjustable and should this not be enough, a range of optional seats are available from the BMW Motorrad catalogue.

The new Motorrad R 1250 GS and RT are setting the benchmark for all heavyweight touring and ADV bikes, ready to take the long way round on any journey.
