This year’s world famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is
already underway, and BMW have taken the opportunity to officially unveil their
all-new
Z4
Roadster
. BMW have stuck to their usual drivetrain formula, putting the engine
up front and sending the power to the rear wheels, a combination proven to
create an exhilarating driving experience across
the entire BMW range.
Beyond that though, there are some quite drastic changes that BMW are promising will make this new generation a sportier car instead of the more relaxed touring roadster that we have come to expect from the previous Z4. The first big change is its folding fabric roof. Ditching the heavy folding hard-top that was fitted on the last Z4 and opting to go back to the cloth roof design of the first generation is a quick way to save the car a serious amount of kerb weight. The new chassis also has a reduced wheelbase and a wider stance combined with perfect 50:50 weight distribution that positions the driver and passenger in the centre of the car in a bid to sharpen the cars handling.
We’re expecting a range of engine and gearbox combinations available to order through ourselves at Williams once the entire range is revealed later this year; but the model BMW has kicked things off with is the flagship M40i First Edition. The First Edition is a limited edition trim, with only 40 in this spec being produced and coming painted in the stunning Frozen Orange metallic.
It’s powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine
producing a total 335bhp. The car can accelerate from 0-62 in just 4.6 seconds,
while the top speed is limited to 155mph. This M40i First Edition also comes
with adaptive dampers, a limited slip differential and up-rated brakes over the
standard models. But again, it’s expected that these parts will be options for
the rest of the range.
For now we will just have to wait and see what the rest of the range brings with it as we’re expecting to get more details later this year.
