The BMW 5 Series Achieves Another Accolade

We’ve celebrated half a century of the BMW 5 series – the vehicle is a pioneer of its class from the outset and represents the pinnacle of business saloons throughout the world.

With the first of the 5 series debuting on the market in 1972 with the E12, designed by legend Paul Bracq, it already exhibited all of the distinguishable features of the upper midsize class saloon we have become accustomed.

Fast forward more than 50 years later and we’re celebrating the eighth generation of the iconic 5 Series - characteristic design elements such as BMW-typical proportions, a long wheelbase, the elongated bonnet and a flowing roofline are presented in a particularly elegant form. Expressive details such as the illuminated BMW kidney "Iconic Glow", the large panoramic glass roof or the crystalline Interaction Bar give the latest iteration of the BMW 5 Series its own personality… and it hasn’t gone unnoticed…

More recently, the i5 came onto – and dominated – the EV scene with plenty of awards under its proverbial belt already… including (but not limited to):

BMW i5 clinches Best Executive Car at UK Car of the Year

The UK Car of the Year Awards (UKCOTY) is a wholly independent set of awards, designed to highlight and advise on the best new cars on the market specifically for UK customers. To qualify for the award, the car needs to have been launched on or after 1 January 2023, or be on sale by 31 December 2023.

Fusing advanced technology with elegant and sporting saloon style, the all-new BMW i5 Saloon has impressed from the offset and picked up Best Executive Car at the UKCOTY Awards 2024.

The top model of each category, seven in total, is then put forward for the overall UK Car of the Year award, which is decided by 30-strong panel of judges consisting of the most knowledgeable and influential automotive journalists in the UK.

“Impressive inside and out, the i5 exudes quality, performance and class. Just a wonderful place to spend time in – no excuse is needed to go for a drive!”.

- John Challen, Editor and Managing Director, UK Car of the Year Awards

The international panel of experts therefore handed the BMW 5 Series the crown of World Luxury Car 2024. The results were announced today at the start of the New York International Auto Show 2024 as part of a ceremony broadcast worldwide via streaming services.

BMW 5 Series claims the title of World Luxury Car 2024.

The success of the BMW 5 Series was underpinned by assessments carried out during extensive test drives by the around 100 car journalists from 30 countries that made up the jury. These ratings were then recorded in detail by the World Car Awards organisers. The BMW 5 Series fended off competition from a field of 13 new luxury vehicles, winning over the jury not only with the majestic power delivery from its portfolio of electrified combustion engines as well as the electric drive system, but also with its high comfort levels over long-distance journeys and numerous digital innovations.

“We are very pleased to receive this prestigious award. The verdict of the international jury shows that our strong-character products with their typical BMW qualities convince and inspire demanding target groups all over the world.”

- Bernd Körber, Senior Vice President BMW Brand and Product Management, Connected Company.
