Exterior

This handsome saloon impresses from any perspective. A powerful four-door body comprises a smartly pleated bonnet and crisply contoured flanks, while a gently sweeping roofline confers a coupé-like profile on the car. There are three standard-issue colours to choose from, including Black Sapphire and Mineral White. Alternatively, you can always go for a splash of colour – Aventurine Red, for instance, or Phytonic Blue, which are available as options.

Travellers in the 7 Series can easily be forgiven for thinking they’ve found themselves in the first-class section of an aircraft. Each position is supremely comfortable and offers excellent support, making even the longest of journeys a pleasure. There’s plenty of room to manoeuvre in both compartments – and space has also been made for a 515-litre boot.

Heated seats throughout Many motorists consider themselves lucky if their car’s front seats are heated. With this high-class saloon, even rear-row travellers are treated to this particular luxury.
Climate control Adding immeasurably to cabin comfort is automatic four-zone air conditioning, making it easy to establish a series of mini-climates that will help to keep everyone happy. All four windows feature one-touch up-down control too.
Reflective windscreen A ‘climate comfort’ windscreen is yet another standard feature that helps to ensure absolute comfort. Whenever the sun is shining brightly, a reflective layer embedded in the glass prevents temperatures from rising unduly in the cabin.

Performance

Close X

If you select the entry-level trim, your 7 Series will likely be fitted with a 3.0-litre diesel engine. This 282bhp unit manages 0-60mph in approximately 5.7 seconds and returns up to 50.4mpg. The most powerful option is a 6.6-litre 577bhp petrol engine, which allows the vehicle to go from 0-60mph in roughly 3.6 seconds. If you’re looking for a version of the car that offers a good mix of performance and efficiency, you may want to select a plug-in hybrid variant. A 3.0-litre 283bhp petrol-electric set-up, for example, allows the car to proceed from a standing stop to 60mph in approximately five seconds, while returning as much as 141.2mpg. It also produces CO2 emissions as low as 46g/km. Impressive figures indeed.

Technology

A 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is installed as standard, featuring, among other things, DAB radio, which provides access to a wide number of stations, each relayed in crystal-clear sound quality. AUX and USB ports feature too, as does enhanced Bluetooth connectivity (offering wireless charging), which allows you to stream your favourite audio content. A host of satellite navigation options can be accessed through the car’s 10.3-inch touchscreen display, such as full-colour 3D maps (which are regularly internet-updated), voice activation and real-time traffic information.

It’s rare that luxury cars are tested by Euro NCAP. However, since the Series 7 is BMW’s flagship saloon and considering the amount of safety tech that is included as standard, it’s almost certain that it would pass with flying colours.
