Two-door sports cars don’t come much better than the 8 Series Convertible, and it looks mightily impressive with its canopy in position, making it barely indistinguishable from its Coupé sibling. And this fully-automatic roof allows you to respond quickly to changing weather conditions, because it can be furled/unfurled in just 15 seconds when driving at speeds of up to 31mph.
The BMW 8 Series Convertible might only feature two doors (which is, of course, a very good look for a vehicle of its type) but there’s still room for four inside. You may find that space in the rear compartment is tight for full-size adults, but it’s useful to have the extra capacity when you need it. There’s every likelihood that younger travellers will be perfectly happy with the amount of room in the back.
Included as standard is a 3.0-litre 335bhp petrol engine, which allows the car to go from 0-60mph in approximately 5.1 seconds. Delivering the ultimate in 8 Series performance is a 4.4-litre 523bhp unleaded unit. This eight-cylinder turbo-boosted engine delivers 0-60mph in roughly 3.7 seconds, which is quite some turn of pace. Although the vehicle isn’t designed with fuel-consumption as a priority (it’s a sports car, after all) there is a decent green option available. This is a 3.0-litre 316bhp diesel unit, which manages up to 40.4mpg and enables 0-60mph in around five seconds.
Wherever you travel, enjoy the immersive audio experience provided by a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system. Whether you choose to listen to Mozart’s Requiem on BBC Radio 3 or ‘Bomber’ by Motörhead on Planet Rock via the car’s DAB radio, you’ll be in for a treat. Of course, you can bring your own sounds to bear, by taking advantage of AUX and USB inputs, or by streaming audio content via enhanced Bluetooth. The latter also makes it possible to wirelessly charge your compatible devices – and enjoy hands-free mobile phone communication. Also included as standard is a 10.3-inch touchscreen satellite navigation system that provides access to a plethora of useful features, such as full-colour 3D maps and up-to-the-minute traffic information.
