Will you opt for the two-door 8 Series Coupé, one of the very best in its class? Perhaps you’d like that self same car, only with a retractable roof? If that’s the case, the 8 Series Convertible is a terrific choice. Alternatively, the 8 Series Gran Coupé maintains the aesthetic qualities of its two-door siblings, and adds two more to the mix, while providing increased cabin capacity.
Although the 8 Series Coupé/Convertible only has two doors, there’s actually space inside for four. Admittedly, two adults in the back might find space a little tight but a pair of younger travellers should be more than happy with the set-up, even on longer trips. By comparison, the 8 Series Gran Coupé offers greater flexibility: a four-door body and plenty of room for two adults in the rear compartment.
Entry-level models are fitted with a 3.0-litre 340bhp petrol engine. This six-cylinder unit produces 500Nm of torque, enabling Coupé variants to go from 0-60mph in approximately five seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. The fastest, most powerful option is a 4.4-litre 530bhp unleaded unit. This eight-cylinder engine delivers a peak torque of 750Nm and 0-60mph in roughly 3.5 seconds (Coupé iterations). Gran Coupé variants lag just a little behind in the performance stakes, while Convertible iterations rank third in terms of acceleration. Overall, though, the differences are fairly negligible.
A total of 16 loudspeakers (including a subwoofer) are included with the 8 Series’ Harman Kardon sound system. This comes with an AM/FM Tuner, DAB digital radio and a touchscreen display. In addition to AUX and USB inputs is enhanced Bluetooth, making it easy to stream audio content, enjoy hands-free telephony and wirelessly charge your compatible devices. The vehicle’s satellite navigation system is accessed via a 10.3-inch touchscreen, and offers 3D mapping, real-time traffic information, smartphone integration and much more. Each 8 Series model features cutting-edge safety technology, including sensors and cameras that keep tabs on hard-to-spot obstacles and potential collisions.
