The vehicle’s compact dimensions make it ideal for urban motoring, whether you’re navigating busy city streets or slotting into modest parking spaces. The 1 Series is quite the looker too, with its classic twin-kidney grille design, rising shoulder line and gently receding roofline. What’s more, access is easy, thanks to the car’s five-door body.
Practicality is a key component of the BMW Series 1, which offers plenty of interior space, especially in terms of legroom. As well as room for three in the back, the car possesses a 380-litre boot space. The load area equals that offered by the Volkswagen Golf – and beats out the Mercedes A-Class by as much as 10 litres.
Whenever you get behind the wheel, you can expect a balanced driving experience and assured handling. Eight-speed automatic transmission allows you to slip through the gears with ease but, if you prefer, an optional manual variant is also available. The car is fitted with a punchy 1.5-litre 116bhp diesel engine as standard, delivering 0-60mph in a little more than 10 seconds, and a top speed of 121mph. The same engine happens to be the greenest choice, returning as much as 83.1mpg while producing CO2 emissions from just 89g/km.
A minimum six-speaker infotainment system is included as standard, featuring a touchscreen display, an AM/FM tuner and DAB radio. AUX and USB inputs feature too, as does Bluetooth connectivity, making it easy to stream your favourite audio content – and enjoy hands-free mobile phone communication. Another standard inclusion is satellite navigation functionality with, among other things, 3D mapping, voice control (in addition to touchscreen operation), and real-time traffic and weather updates.
