Owning the M4 Convertible is almost like being in possession of two cars at once. With its canopy in place, it is, to all intents and purposes, a sporty coupé, complete with swept back roofline. With the roof fully retracted, the only thing overhead is the sky itself.
Inside, plenty of space is available for driver and co-passenger. Meanwhile, in the rear compartment, there’s room for two, particularly if they’re a pair of younger travellers. While the M4 Convertible’s retractable roof has numerous merits, it’s worth noting that it does eat into luggage space. A 370-litre boot doesn’t quite match up to that offered by the car’s Coupé sibling.
The M4 Convertible’s substantial retractable roof impinges somewhat on performance, making it roughly three tenths of a second slower than the Coupé. However, this drop-top is still a powerful and agile operator. For instance, a standard issue 2.0-litre petrol engine delivers 290Nm of torque and enables the car to go from 0-60mph in approximately 8.2 seconds. Optimal performance levels are provided by another six-cylinder unit: a 3.0-litre 313bhp diesel engine that produces a peak torque of 630Nm. This enables the vehicle to achieve 0-60mph in around five seconds.
Standard-issue audio entertainment features include a BMW Professional AM/FM radio, an MP3-compatible CD player and a DAB tuner. You can programme up to eight of your favourite entertainment components, making their operation an absolute breeze. Moreover, a wide range of driver-focused features can be accessed via an 8.8-inch touchscreen, such as up-to-the-minute traffic information. An array of extremely useful driver aids are included as standard, including Hill-Start Assist, which prevents the vehicle from rolling uncontrolled whenever the engine is started on an incline.
