BMW iPerformance

Not yet convinced by the idea of an electrically-powered car? Prepare to be. BMW has designed a series of performance-driven cars that utilise electricity and they’re already on UK roads by the hundreds.

Powered by a petrol engine and an electric motor, they hit the sweet spot between a strong performance and fuel-efficiency. You can find an eco-friendly car that matches your driving style in the iPerformance plug-in range. For the adventurers there’s the iPerformance models of the X5 and 2 Series Active Tourer. If you’re looking for something more sophisticated, there are the high end iPerformance variants of the 3 Series Saloon and 7 Series Saloon.

The electric motor makes the cars much more fuel-efficient. The 3 Series Saloon, for example, can achieve up to 148mpg. That’s because the petrol engine doesn’t do all the work. For up to 30 miles in the iPerformance models of the 7 Series Saloon, 25 miles in the 3 Series and 2 Series Active Tourer, and 19 miles in the X5, the cars will drive on electricity alone. This mode works for shorter journeys, when you’re driving to and from work or the shops, for example.

Once you’ve got passed the green credentials, you’re left with a progressive car with seriously good levels of performance. The electric motor is exceptionally quiet, making all drives feel relaxing and smooth. When you’re on those longer journeys using the petrol engine and you need a bit more power to overtake, for instance, the electric motor will kick into action providing instant torque for faster acceleration.

Topping up the battery is simple. Either plug it into your mains at home, or visit a charging point on the road - there are over 1,500 points in the UK, and the number is growing.

If you’ve fallen in love with the feel of the standard non-iPerformance models, you don’t need to worry. They have the same features, interior design and exterior looks – just with a few extras.
